Background of the Study
Forced displacement, often resulting from violent conflicts, natural disasters, or political instability, has become a significant issue in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in the North-East region, including Borno State. Monguno Local Government Area (LGA) in Borno has been severely impacted by the Boko Haram insurgency, which has displaced thousands of individuals from their homes. As people flee violence, they are forced to resettle in camps or unfamiliar areas, where they face both physical and psychological challenges. This mass displacement leads to shifts in community structures and interactions, which can exacerbate existing ethnic, religious, and regional tensions.
The effect of forced displacement on intergroup relations is complex. On one hand, it may result in a blending of displaced populations with host communities, promoting cooperation and solidarity. On the other hand, it may lead to tensions, particularly in cases where resources are scarce, competition for aid is high, and cultural or religious differences come to the forefront. This study seeks to explore the dynamics of intergroup relations in Monguno LGA following forced displacements caused by the Boko Haram insurgency. The goal is to understand how displacement influences ethnic and religious relations, community cohesion, and social integration, and how these relations can be improved to foster long-term peace and stability.
Statement of the Problem
The forced displacement of communities in Monguno LGA due to Boko Haram's insurgency has had significant effects on intergroup relations. Displaced persons, primarily from rural areas, have been resettled in different host communities, where they are often met with suspicion, resentment, or outright hostility. These strained relations are exacerbated by competition for limited resources, such as food, water, and shelter, and by the social and psychological trauma caused by the displacement. While humanitarian organizations have made efforts to alleviate the plight of the displaced, the long-term implications for intergroup relations have not been fully explored. This study aims to investigate how forced displacement has affected intergroup relations in Monguno, examining both positive and negative outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the effect of forced displacement on intergroup relations in Monguno LGA, Borno State.
To assess how displacement has affected community cohesion and integration between displaced persons and host populations.
To explore strategies that can be employed to improve intergroup relations in the aftermath of displacement in Monguno LGA.
Research Questions

Displaced persons in Monguno LGA face significant challenges in integrating into host communities due to cultural, ethnic, and resource-based tensions.
Conflict resolution and peacebuilding interventions can improve intergroup relations between displaced persons and host communities in Monguno LGA.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on Monguno LGA, Borno State, examining the experiences of displaced persons and host communities in the region between 2015 and 2025. Data will be collected through interviews, focus groups, and surveys with displaced persons, community leaders, and humanitarian organizations. Limitations include challenges in accessing conflict-affected areas and the sensitivity of discussing displacement-related trauma.
